Although the negative health effects of cigarette smoking cannot be debated, it remains the single most common cause of preventable deaths. Each year, over 430,000 people die as a result of a smoking related disease. Yet, over 50 million continue to smoke, including over 3 million teens.
An estimated three thousand teenagers begin to smoke each day, and one thousand of them will eventually die as a result. According to the American Lung Association, cigarette smoking leads to 87% of lung cancers, emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Overweight and obesity is measured for adults using the Body Mass Index (BMI) which is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared. For example, a woman 1.67m in height and weighing 65kg would have a BMI of 23.3 which falls within the healthy weight range. Overweight is measured at a BMI of 25 or more with obesity determined at a BMI of 30 or more. These cut-off points are based on associations between and chronic disease and mortality and have been adopted for use internationally by the World Health Organisation.
Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break as bone mineral density is reduced. When a bone is affected by osteoporosis bone marrow has much larger holes within it than a normal bone and as a result bone is much weaker and softer. If osteoporosis left untreated it can progress slowly and painlessly without you even realisng that you have the condition until the actual bone break.
